Development of a Microfluidic System for Sodium Chloride Detection Using Modified Cholesteric Liquid Crystals |

The application of chiral liquid crystals (CLCs) in microfluidic systems for the detection of diverse sodium chloride concentrations is investigated in this study. A 5CB liquid crystal-based optical system was initially designed to investigate the color shifts induced by sodium chloride. The system consisted of a light source, a polarizer, an optical microscope, and equipment to record color changes. This phase involved the manual injection of different concentrations of sodium chloride solutions into the liquid crystal via micropipette, with color change observations recorded at various time points. Although effective in demonstrating color change, this method was hampered by manual injection and the need for extra optical equipment, reducing its portability and use. As solution to these issues, a chiral liquid crystal (CLC) comprised of 5CB and the additive BDH1305 was utilized in place of 5CB alone. Higher sensitivity to shifts in sodium chloride concentration was achieved with this modification, which also removed the need for an external polarizer. Following this, solutions were injected uniformly and precisely using a microfluidic system and CLC. ImageJ software processed images to analyze RGB values, revealing more uniform and accurately recorded color changes in the system. The system accurately detected varying sodium chloride concentrations, as demonstrated by the linear relationship between color changes and concentrations. This research indicates that the combination of a microfluidic system and CLC allows for more precise and sensitive detection. In medical, industrial, and environmental applications, this system is a useful tool for concentration measurement and has significant future development potential. |
