چکیده مقاله
Environmental pollution, primarily caused by the persistent accumulation of plastic waste from packaging, remains a critical global challenge. Addressing this issue has led to extensive research on biodegradable plastics, with commercialization making significant strides in recent decades. Among these materials, biodegradable polyesters, such as poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), have emerged as promising candidates to replace conventional petroleum-based plastics in packaging applications due to their biodegradability and favorable properties. This study investigates the properties of PBS/PBAT blends prepared through melt blending, with an emphasis on their suitability for packaging. Structural analyses, including ATR-FTIR, confirmed the occurrence of ester interchange reactions during the blending process, which can influence the final properties of the blends. Adding 15 wt.% PBS to PBAT resulted in a 72% increase in the elastic modulus, significantly enhancing its mechanical performance. However, the crystallinity of the blend dropped to below 10%, highlighting PBS's inhibitory effect on PBAT crystallization. The findings demonstrate that PBS/PBAT blends, with appropriate compatibility, offer considerable potential as sustainable and functional alternatives to conventional plastics in packaging applications.
